As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen many stunning locations: from ancient castles to gorgeous farms, from churches by cliffs to renaissance palaces.

But I have to say that Ærø Island is one of my all-time favorites. This charming Danish island, nestled in the Baltic Sea, has a unique atmosphere and energy that truly make it a one-of-a-kind destination for a wedding.

When I think of Ærø, the first word that comes to mind is “intimate”. It’s a small island, which means that you get to experience a sense of community and connection that’s hard to find in larger, more sprawling locations. Whether you’re strolling the cobblestone streets of Ærøskøbing or taking a bike ride through the countryside, you feel like you’re part of something special here. Outside, just the sea.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing some weddings on Ærø, and what strikes me every time is how much care and attention goes into every aspect of the day. From the flowers to the food to the music, everything is done with a level of craftsmanship and artistry that’s truly impressive. And what’s more, the island’s residents are incredibly welcoming and friendly, so you really feel like you’re part of the community.

One of the things I love about Ærø is that it’s a place where anything is possible. Whether you want to get married on the beach, in a charming little church, or in a rustic barn, there’s a venue that will suit your taste and style. And if you’re looking for a unique and memorable experience, you can even get married on a boat in the archipelago – an experience that’s sure to be unforgettable.

One of my favorite weddings on Ærø was for an LGBTQ+ couple, and I have to say that Ærø is an incredibly welcoming and inclusive place. The island has a long tradition of openness and acceptance, which means that everyone is welcome here. Even more: nobody will look at you while you hold hands and kiss in the streets. Which is a new feeling for so many of us in the LGBTQ+ community.

And because the island is so intimate, you really feel like you’re part of a larger community that supports and celebrates love in all its forms.

If you’re considering getting married on Ærø, here are a few things you should know:

The Venues

As I mentioned earlier, Ærø has a variety of venues that can accommodate weddings of all sizes and styles. One of the most popular venues is Ærøskøbing Kirke, a stunning little church that dates back to the 13th century. The church has beautiful stained-glass windows and a simple, rustic elegance that makes it a wonderful choice for a traditional wedding.

The Town Hall in Ærøskøbing is a very popular venue for couples coming from all over the world. Not the prettiest place in the world, but it’s conveniently close to the town and to the harbour.

If you’re looking for something a bit more unconventional, you might consider getting married at a local inn or restaurant. Many of these venues have outdoor areas that are perfect for a summer wedding, and the food is always amazing.

Another option is to get married at a private residence. There are several beautiful homes on the island that can be rented for weddings, and they offer a level of intimacy and personalization that you won’t find at a larger venue.

The Vibe

One of the things that sets Ærø apart from other wedding destinations is its unique vibe. The island has a laid-back, relaxed energy that’s perfect for couples who want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and focus on their big day.

There’s a sense of timelessness on Ærø that’s hard to find in other places. The island has a rich history, and you can feel it in the architecture, the landscapes, and the way of life. When you’re on Ærø, you feel like you’re part of something bigger and more meaningful than just a wedding – you feel like you’re part of a timeless tradition of love and connection.

The Activities

Another thing that makes Ærø so special is the range of activities available to couples and their guests. If you’re a nature lover, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to explore the island’s beautiful landscapes. You can rent bikes and cycle around the island, taking in the breathtaking views of the sea and the countryside. You can also go for a walk in the woods, or take a picnic to one of the island’s many beaches.

For those who prefer a more cultural experience, there are several museums and art galleries on the island, showcasing the rich history and creative talent of the local community. You can also take a guided tour of the island, learning about its unique history and culture.

And of course, there’s no shortage of amazing food and drink on Ærø. The island has a rich culinary tradition, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to sample delicious local specialties, like smoked herring and fresh seafood. There are also several excellent wineries and distilleries on the island, where you can try some of the best wine and spirits that Denmark has to offer.

The Memories

At the end of the day, what really makes a wedding on Ærø so special is the memories that you’ll take away from the experience. Whether you’re exchanging vows in a beautiful church, or saying “I do” on a boat in the archipelago, you’ll be creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As a wedding photographer, I feel incredibly honored to be part of those memories. I love capturing the raw emotions and tender moments that make each wedding so unique, and I feel a deep sense of joy and pride knowing that my images will be treasured for years to come.

And on Ærø, those memories are even more special. The island has a magic and a charm that’s hard to describe in words, but I’m sure you’ll feel it in your bones when you’re there. It’s a place where love and connection are celebrated and honored, and where you’ll feel a sense of belonging that’s hard to find in other places.
