How much do you edit your wedding photographs?

wedding photography editing process

If you got this far into my website, you probably know by now how much I love photographing weddings. It's such an amazing feeling to capture all the special moments of a couple's big day. But you might be wondering, how much do I edit the photos after the wedding? Well, let me tell you all about it!

First, let's talk about the difference between editing and retouching.

Editing involves basic adjustments like correcting colors, light, and straightening the photo. On the other hand, retouching is when you manipulate a photograph to change certain parts, like removing objects or people from the background. You've probably seen those hilarious Photoshop fails online, like models with three arms - that's retouching!

Personally, I believe in keeping the photos as realistic as possible. After all, wedding photos should tell the story of the day, both the good and the bad. Unless it's absolutely necessary (like if the bride wakes up with a pimple on her face), I tend not to retouch the images.

However, editing is a different story. As wedding photographers, we don't always have control over the environment we're working in. We can't control the light, the colors, or even where people will be sitting. Sometimes, we end up with photos that have a purple tint on the skin or too much contrast between sunny and shadowy areas.

That's where editing comes in. It's a chance to make adjustments and enhance the photos to make them look their best. And I'll admit, sometimes I spend a lot of time editing a single photo. But for me, what really matters is the outcome. I want to create photos that look as natural and spontaneous as possible, where the editing isn't even noticeable.

At the end of the day, my goal is to capture those special moments and emotions of the couple's big day. I want to be invisible, both during the shooting and the editing process, so that the photos can truly tell their story. So, when it comes to editing wedding photos, my advice is to enhance them, not change them too much. That way, you'll end up with beautiful, authentic photos that will be cherished for years to come.
